Olivia & Reuben De Melo

  • Whalebone Brewing Company 27 Patterson Way Exmouth, WA, 6707 Australia (map)

Reuben and Olivia met through the Perth music scene. The now husband and wife duo are solo artists but occasionally come together to perform their original music with rich harmonies, good vibes and soulful connection. They love covering an array of musical genres, from roots and reggae to soul, pop and blues. A Johnny Cash rendition wouldn't pass them by, either.

You can hear their music on Spotify and other platforms, including a track they released together called "Let it Rain".

When it comes to her passion, music, Olivia De Melo is indie-soul at heart, with an eclectic mix of singer-songwriter, roots, pop-folk and chilled Sunday vibes. With lush melody lines, poetic lyrics and vintage tones, her music has multi-genre reach and audience appeal. And yet, her style is quintessentially her own, with unmistakable vintage era ambience and soulful vocal performances in every track.

Olivia came into the local Perth music scene fairly recently, over the past few years, and has since performed at most of the major Perth music venues, including the Crown Ballroom and Perth Convention Centre, as well as some of Perth’s local music festivals. With her focus glued to her music in 2020, she is on a steep trend to releasing new singles for the rest of the year.

Olivia De Melo is known by her local fans as having soulful vocals and lyrics, with indie-pop appeal and head-bopping beats. If you managed to get a ticket to the intimate sold out show hosted by Suburban Vibes this July, you’ll be expecting some cheeky banter and storytelling, and probably one or two covers of a classic soul tune from the likes of Etta James.

WINDOWS

Her first single since 2018, Windows will be a sweet and gentle indie-folk come-back to gear up for following releases. Venturing into folk is something experimental for the soulful Olivia De Melo, but challenging and exploring her sound, as well as stretching herself musically, is a natural ebb and flow for the Perth artist.

Windows is a nostalgic “it’s cold outside” track, with melancholy indie tones with an uplifting folk-pop chorus and lush harmonies reminiscent of the original folk outfits of the vintage era.

With a modern re-interpretation of the classic folk song, this Australian Indie Folk number would sit soundly in an Indie Folk or Acoustic playlist, yet the vocal tones and lyrics are also in singer-songwriter territory.

The song is easy listening besides a warm fire, with the cold wind and rain battering against the window.
